Cute c.1860 half plate Opalotype (direct positive on a sheet of opal, or "milk," glass) in a scarce period thermoplastic "Union" picture frame with a thin wooden backing held in place by two tiny cut nails. Back of frame is embossed with the patent date, August 7, 1855. Overall condition of both image and frame is excellent. There is a super tiny, tight crack at the upper right corner of the rectangular image enclosure that extends slightly to the outer edge of the oval. From the front, it's only evident as a tiny "nick" at the extreme outer edge of the oval. Again, this crack is very small - you really have to be looking for it to notice - and is mentioned here strictly in the interest of accuracy.

Frame is a very deep chocolate brown with a gilt inner rim showing a little wear at the bottom. This frame was designed to hold any half-plate (4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches) daguerreotype, ambrotype, or other similarly sized image. Outside of frame measures 6 7/8 x 8 1/8 inches, overall.
