About Your Pen
A pen consists of 2 primary parts; the pen kit itself in various styles and platings and the pen blank (the material that makes up the body of the pen). There are literally thousands of blanks available from exotic hardwoods to acrylics to deer antlers to corncobs and more.
We offer our pens in different premium platings to satisfy many tastes in writing instruments. They include:
24k Gold Plating: The 24k plating has a bright gold color and features and epoxy coating to lengthen the life of the finish.
Brushed Satin: This finish is subtle and has elegant pewter like color.
Black Enamel: This is a durable, low luster finish that works well with acrylics and light colored woods.
Rhodium: A precious metal from the platinum group, one of the longest lasting finishes, tarnish proof and scratch and stain resistant.
Titanium Nitride (Gold TN): This finish looks like 24k gold, but will outlast the gold plating in appearance. This is the longest lasting plating possible. It will provide years of service.
Black Titanium (Black TN): A classic gun metal look with the long lasting properties of the titanium finish.
Chrome: Chrome is an extremely long wearing plating capable of resisting everyday wear and tear. Highly recommended for key rings, pens and other projects, chrome gives you a shiny, rich look at an economy price.
10k Gold: This popular plating blends hard nickel and the beauty of gold together to form a brilliant plating that is durable and affordable.
Satin: Satin series pens undergo a special plating process that produces a matte finish that features a slight texture that looks and feels great. This popular plating offers a unique alternative to traditional plating.
Black Chrome: Black Chrome offers a unique alternative to traditional platings that works extremely well with lighter color woods. The soft sheen and depth of color make Black Chrome a favorite.
Copper: Copper offers a unique beauty and warmth that begs to be held. Because copper is soft by nature, these pens feature a durable epoxy layer on top of the copper plating to increase wear resistance
Woodcraft Gold: This proprietary finish is similar to Gold TN
Sterling Silver: Standard .925 WWWQWWWoodcraftW
Occasionally we will offer a pen with additional platings. Thesewill be explained in the description.
Finishing Your Wood Pen
Once your pen has been turned on the lathe, it is ready for finishing. I begin the process by sanding the blank with 5 grits of sandpaper coated with walnut oil to provide a smooth flawless surface. This walnut oil is the key to my finish, permeating the wood and bringing out the finest details in the wood grain. Then your pen goes through a 9 step process of fine sanding with a walnut oil based friction polish ending with an amazing 10000 grit finish. Next comes a 2 step polishing with a coating specifically designed for pens (again based with walnut oil) to achieve the highest luster possible. Finally, it receives a wax coating to give your pen the ultimate overall protection.
Acrylic pens undergo a similar but slightly different process. The same meticulous care is given to each pen.
Lastly, your pen is placed in a soft cloth pouch for protection and is ready for shipping.
Your pen will provide years of service and is suitable for collecting, use at the office, or as a gift to be treasured. We hope you enjoy your purchase.
What about CA?
Cyanoacrylate (CA) is the scientific name for super glue. Many penturners use CA to finish their pens. While CA does indeed provide a hard, durable surface, in the end you have a fine wooden pen that looks and feels like plastic. The finishing process I use is an all natural finish resulting in a highly polished pen. It is occasionally necessary to use CA in making a pen. I will always note in my description if I use it to finish one of my pens.
Why So Many Prices?
If you have been searching , you have undoubtedly realized that there is a wide array of pricing for what seems to be similar if not identical pens. There are several factors that enter into arriving at a sales price.
First, there is the cost of the pen kit itself. This includes all the metal parts that make up your pen. This cost depends on the style and plating choice of the pen designer.
Next is the cost of the pen blank. This blank makes up the body of the pen. This cost can vary greatly depending upon the material and its quality.
Finally, there is the cost of the artist's time. This is, without a doubt, the cause for much of the pricing differential. Each artist has to determine what he or she thinks his time and skill are worth. Obviously this can be very subjective and is ultimately determined by you, the buyer. If you feel that you are receiving appropriate value for your money spent, a sale is made.
Lin's Pens strives to offer a fair price for our pens. Iwould sincerely appreciate the opportunity to provide you with a quality writing instrument that you will be proud to own.
