Harlem Book Of The Dead By James Van Der Zee, Post Mortem Photographs In Harlem For SaleHARLEM BOOK OF THE DEADby James Van Der Zee (with Owen Dodson and Camille Billops)
1978 rare out of print softcover book. This book is a study of the very famous post mortem photographs of a master of modern photography James Van Der Zee, who photographed the human condition in Harlem in the first half of the 20th century. His photographs are poignant and touching, very professionally done, and quite unusual. He employed artistic conventions and inserted scripture, verses, etc into the negatives of his photos to make some pretty touching memento mori. Set against verses and poems, the images are sad and touching and document the beauty of this powerful genre.
