Henry Lee LIGHTHORSE HARRY Stratford Hall Commemorative Postal Cover....
Military leader and hero during the Revolutionary War, Henry Lee "Lighthorse Harry" served in the Virginia state legislature, the Continental Congress and as governor of Virginia, imparting his military legacy to his son, Robert E. Lee.
Shown here is a Commemorative Postal Cover in the form of a Proof Card, bearing the postmark of January 29 from Dumfries, Virgina, the anniversary of Lee's birth. On a Commemorative Cover, the stamp serves the purpose of supplying postage, for without it, the post office would not furnish a cancellation. The two stamps used are the US Flag Stamp and the 1981 stamp commemorating the bicentennial of the Battle of Yorktown.
The full-color cachet (artwork on the envelope) features aportrait of Henry Lee, the Lee ancestral home of Stratford Hall and Lee on horseback. The entire cachet is surrounded by an embossed border. Also included is a short commentary about Lee.
