Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Hand Written & Signed Poem, Framed W/ Portrait Rare:
Up for sale is an outstanding piece of American literature history; a hand written and signed poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Longfellow was arguably the most notable 19th century American poet and a rockstar of his day after achieving fame and success from his works, most notably being "The Voices of Night" and collections of poems like "Hymn to the Night" and "A Psalm of Life". His estimated net worth before he died in 1882 was an whopping $356,000 USD.
This hand written poem is the final stanza from the notable poem "The Day is Done" which was published in 1844 and was used as the preface for his book "The Waif" which was a collection of sentimental poems with nature being a center subject.
The hand written stanza reads
"The night shall be filled with music,And the cares, that infest the day,Shall fold their tents, like the Arabs,And as silently steal away.
Henry W. Longfellow 1856"
This was written by Henry approximately 12 years after "The Waif" was published and the "The Day is Done" was first read when he was in his mid 40's. The writing was executed in black ink that has slightly oxidized, due to the iron in the ink and is boldly and legibly signed. Written on his most commonly seen paper from"Delarue & Co of London"(embossed in the top left corner) measuring approximately 6.25 x 4 inches succumbingto toning and two old vertical folds. The integrity of the paper is still sound void of any tears, rips, pin hols, foxing, repairs etc...
This handwritten poem is also accompanied by a second hand written poem as seen in images 8-11. This love letter/poem accompanied the hand written poem but it is not from the hand of Longfellow. It is written on the exact same type of paper from Delarue & Co. of London and while we do know their is a connection it is an unclear mystery who this was written for and by.
Professionally framed and ready to be hung in your collection this has been mounted with archival quality materials that are acid free and rests behind a piece of museum glass safe from any damaging UV rays. The frame measures approximately 22 x 16.5 inches and is in excellent condition. An antique portrait of Longfellow is included which is an original woodblock print (9 x 10 inches) from the late 1850's chosen to best depict Henry as he penned this poem in 1856.
This is a fantastic and important piece of American history from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow that is extremely rare to come by and is guaranteedto be 100% authentic. His hand penned letters are what is most often seen available at sale but never do hand written poems show up in the market as they are so closely held in private collections and institutions. I can not stress enough that while the images provided do accurately represent the condition, quality and beauty of this fine collection of hand written poems and woodblock portrait that if you have any questions please ask them prior to purchasing. I appreciate you taking a look and considering this piece to becoming the centerpiece of your collection.Thank you for visiting Henning Fine Art's online gallery here on !
