Hickam Field , Pearl Harbor, Relic, Original For Sale
Plate mounted on wood with plaque.The plate is from the Officer’s Mess at Hickam Field and the frame of charred wood comes from Hickam Field US Air Force Base, Pearl Harbor. Hickam Field was attacked and destroyed in the second phase of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on 7 December 1941. There were 3 groups of Japanese aircraft attacking Pearl Harbor and the third one consisted of 45 Mitsubishi A6M aircraft with the designated targets of airfields. At the time the units stationed at Hickam were the 18th Bombardment Wing and the Hawaiian Air Depot. The airfield was the only one in Hawaii with runways long enough toaccommodatethe B-17 Flying Forts that were beginning to arrive.The plate features aircraft circling an octogonal tower, masonry clad,171 feet tall, that was the outstanding feature of Hickam. On Sunday, 7th december, 1941, 51 planes were on the ground at Hickam, half were destroyed, hangers 9 ,13 and fifteen were destroyed along with theHawaiian Air Depot. A bomb hit the messhall killing 35. This wood is from the remains of the attack on Hickam on December 7th,1941.The plaque marks the presentation by General Moench, USAF. He was awarded theDistinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal (with 11 oak leaf clusters) and had been based at Hickam. 209 x 420mm, diameter of plate, 185mmCondition: good, ORIGINAL Offered by a dealer in antiquarian books and historic documents.
