The figures represent the God Mercury with winged helmets.Mercury was the Greekgod of messages and of trade, particularly of the grain trade. Mercury was also considered a god of abundance and commercial success. They are said to have come from a shop building in Bayeux which was 16th.century in date and destroyed by fire in around 1920. Brackets or corbels were often tucked under cornices, the bracket-shaped supports were partly to prop up portico roofs, and over-hanging timberwork jettiesbut also to ward off evil spirits or convey messagesand these, probably from a shop-frontmost likely represented good trade or abundance. These bracketssometimes depicting Classical Gods, Saints, priests, often grotesques like gargoyles, dragons and drunkards.
