Highly Rare And Large Pair Of 16th./17th. Century Carved Wood Caryatid Brackets:
A highly rare and large pair of 16th./17th. century carved oakcaryatid brackets. The figures represent the God Mercury with winged helmets.Mercury was the Greekgod of messages and of trade, particularly of the grain trade. Mercury was also considered a god of abundance and commercial success. They are said to have come from a shop building in Bayeux which was 16th.century in date and destroyed by fire in around 1920. Brackets or corbels were often tucked under cornices, the bracket-shaped supports were partly to prop up portico roofs, and over-hanging timberwork jettiesbut also to ward off evil spirits or convey messagesand these, probably from a shop-frontmost likely represented good trade or abundance. These bracketssometimes depicting Classical Gods, Saints, priests, often grotesques like gargoyles, dragons and drunkards.
These have spent many years outside and therefore have suffered weathering, and in places, blurring the original fine detail.One also has acrack whichis not structural, but some may findit disfiguring. They are very heavy and large at 19.5 inches long. The postage cost reflects the weight of these items.
