Historic AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE King George III Proclaims 1782 British Newspaper
(Note: additional images are located below the description)
Shown is an original & historic old newspaper, offered to enhance your collectible interest: DREWRY'S DERBY MERCURY, England, Dec. 12, 1782
* American Independence proclaimed (historic)
* George III of the United Kingdom
On the front page near the top of the first column is a speech delivered by the King of England on December 5 headed: "This Majesty's Most Gracious Speech to Both Houses of Parliament". In the King's speech he proclaims the independence of America: "Since the close of the last Sessions...I lost no time in giving the necessary orders to prohibit the further prosecution of offensive war upon the continent of North America....I have pointed all my views and measures, as well in Europe as in North America, to an entire and cordial reconciliation with those Colonies. Finding it indispensable to the attainment of this object, I did not hesitate to go the full length of the powers vested in me, and offered to declare them Free and independent States, by an article to be inserted in the treaty of peace....In thus admitting their separation from the crown of these kingdoms....I make it my humble and earnest prayer to Almighty God, that Great Britain may not feel the evils which might result for so great a dismemberment of the empire; and that America may be free from those calamities, which have formerly proved in the mother Country how essential monarchy is to the enjoyment of constitutional liberty..." & more.
Also on the ftpg: "It is reported that a cessation of hostilities with America will immediately take place; it is the natural consequence of the preliminary which was signed at Paris by Mess. Fitzherbert and Oswald on the one part, and Mess. Franklin, Jay, Adams, and Jefferson on the other. The express which brought over an account of the signing of the preliminary Articles at Paris traveled with the greatest expedition: the Articles were signed late in the evening of the 20th of November...".
Page 2 is entirely taken up with reporting from the House of Lords & the House of Commons, most of the discussion focused on the granting of independence to the American colonies. A few bits include: "...Lord Stermont said he could not see any reason for making the Independence of American an unequivocal Preliminary Article..." and: "...The Speech offered Independence to America, & offered that Independence as the only means of procuring peace..." and: "...He adverted to the last campaign in America, dwelling particularly on the loss of the army under Lord Cornwallis...opinion with his Majesty's Ministers, that an offer of independence to America was the only means of procuring peace..." and so much more.
Great and very historic content, particularly nice to find on the front page of a British newspaper. Four pages, folio size, great condition.
