[While Thomas Jefferson was still alive]
JOHN PENN & RICHARD PENN
BOTH WERE CLOSE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM PENN AND PROPRIETORS OF MAJOR CHUNKS OF PENNSYLVANIA (and what became DELAWARE as well).
THEY LOST MUCH OF THIS OWNERSHIP AFTER THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
These men had a colorful history. For example, Richard was once lieutenant Colonial governor of Pennsylvania, and he also served as President of the Board of the College of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania).
At the time of this indenture, they had both gone back to live in England and, through their attorney, John Coates, were selling off portions of their holdings in Pennsylvania.
This PARTICULAR piece of land is in Liberty Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania -- a beautiful, rural area along the Maryland border not far from Gettysburg.
The deed is personally signed by John Coates (lawyer, on behalf of Richard and John Penn), James McKinley, and witnesses Alan Cobian & Fred Beates.
Here you have my best good-faith attempt to disclose all noteworthy issues. Keep in mind, though, that vintage/antique items always show their age -- (Don't we all!?) --so please expect that there will be something about this item (or lot) that's not mentioned, simply because it would be impossible to disclose every detail about every small dent, etc.
- Yes, it has some minor condition issues! This item is 211 years old. It was signed while Thomas Jefferson was still alive.
- There is some staining, and there are 2 small spots where the main seam is just starting to separate. (See final photo.)
- But it DOES have all 4 of its original wax seals (which are often missing on these very old indentures).
- NO SIGNS OF ABUSE -- such as mildew, fire, mold -- that I can see.
- Please read the ENTIRE listing/description and supersize all photos.
- Ask any questions before offerding. This item is NON-returnable. Thank you.
