Historical Staffordshire Dark Blue Transfer Plate - R&j Clews C1818-1834 For Sale
Great looking Historical Staffordshire Dark Blue Transfer Plate. Research at the website states': "The series to which this plate belongs is also known as The States Series, as well as The States Border Series, due to the states' names in the border. Lady Justice is on the left, holding a portrait medallion of George Washington, and Lady Liberty is on the right. There is also a Masonic symbol. There are two views that have sheep on the front lawn and a mansion in the background, this, where the drive is next to the house, and number 15 where the drive encircles the sheep and winds upward toward the house and passes in front of it.Recent discoveries and the research efforts of author and lecturer Dick Henrywood indicate that all of the center views in this series are British. The source prints for these views have led to the specific identificatiion of all the structures, save one. This view is Lartington, Yorkshire, and appears in an article by Dick Henrywood in Ceramics in America 2011, entitled "The States Border Series by Ralph & James Clews", as figure 12 on p. 108."The plate is ~ 8 3/4" in diameter, shows well but does have the usual kiln stilt marks, some utensil marks, wear on the footrim, plus a long internal hairline with a touchup at Lady Justice's knee. I do not know what the additional symbol above the potter's imprint is - if anyone with knowledge would reply I would include that in the listing. My wife collected for many years - please check my other listings. Thank you for looking. Thank you again for offerding.
