"Philip Graham first became interested in showboats in the 1930's when he met that remarkable woman, Captain Callie French, at the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. She had long before retired from the River, but showboats were still her major interest. Preliminary research convinced him that the true story of showboats had never been written, and he addressed himself to the task of collecting the material from which an authentic picture of the institution could be fashioned. He visited as many showboats as possible and travelled up and down the Mississippi and its tributaries in search of information. Most of Showboats, aside from first-hand observation, came from interviews with the captains of the old boats, their families, and other showboaters, especially performers and musicians; from the logs, diaries, letters, account books, and other records written on board showboats; from handbills, posters, and newspaper files, and from all available printed sources dealing with the subject. Philip Graham is a professor of American Literature at the University of Texas. Author of a number of scholarly works in his field, he has proved in Showboats that it is possible to write with imagination and genuine popular appeal and still adhere to the standards of true scholarship."
