Hobbs, Brockunier Opalescent Cruet

This gorgeous glass cruet was made in the late 1880’s by Hobbs Brockunier & Co. of Wheeling West Virginia. The blue opalescent mold-blown piece is Windows Swirl pattern. The handle is applied, and the spout is pulled into a tricorner form. The base has a polished pontil mark. This cruet stands 5” (13 cm) tall measured without the stopper. Measured with the stopper in place it stands 6 ¾” (17 cm) tall.

Condition: This beautiful old piece is in good condition and displays beautifully. There is one very tiny nick on the top rim of the spout. The applied handle has a heat check in the glass located where it was attached at the top. The inner walls of this cruet have a whitish haze visible through some of the “windows”. This inner cloudiness isn’t terribly noticeable however, due to the opalescent coloration in the glass. There are minor scratches on the outer sides located at the widest part of the swirled body. The spout has a couple of tiny inclusion specks (dark spots of debris trapped in the glass when it was blown). The faceted stopper is not the original, but it fits quite well with only a slight wobble. This stopper has a chip in the facets on one side, and a small number of light scratches. In addition, the stopper has a few minor nicks on the lower ground glass end where they aren’t visible.
