This is my first Classic Hobo Nickel I carved on a 1937 Buffalo/Indian Head nickel.  I carved it with the Lindsay classic graver tool a friend has kindly loaned me until I can earn enough money so I can get my own tools.  I need a microscope, the classic and gravers to go with it, a compressor, an engraving vise, table, sharpening system and a multitude of other small essential items in order to be able to make these coins look the way I picture them in my mind.  I know I have a long way to go but I will get better the more I do.  Please offer a lot and offer high  so I can accomplish my goal.   It is not the first Hobo Nickel I have done  (it is the first classic though) but the others I did were with rotary tools and I cannot get the detail I want with those type of tools, hence the engraving tools I need to do better and more intricate work.

Think of how small a nickel is and you will have an idea of how small this work of art really is. You can also get a nickel sized coin bezel (pendant frame) to put it into so you can wear it as a piece of jewelry, put on a key chain etc. or you can just display it. It is initialed on the front. It will be shipped in a 2\" x 2\" cardbord holder.

Please note: The image is greatly enlarged to show detail and might be a little grainy and coarse looking...pixelated :)

The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coin essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. The nickel, because of its size, thickness, and relative softness, was a favored coin for this purpose. However, the term is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations. Due to its low cost and portability, this medium was particularly popular among hobos, hence the name.
