1973 HONDA CR250M ELSINORE PRODUCTION RACERCONCOURS RESTORATION"EARLY 73" WITH DOCUMENTED BILLET CRANK
Not long into the 1973 production of the CR250M Elsinore, Honda executives made a production cost savings decision that included changing the billet steel engine crank to a casted version and for that reason and because it is estimated that very few have survived, the term "early 73" was adopted to reference these very rare and highly collectible models...
In addition to the rarity of the "early 73", the first frame no. offered to the retail market was CR250M-1000216 and it is estimated that less than 6,000 early 73's were produced and sold in that first year...
The engine serial no. stamping method denotes the inclusion of the billet crank to that engine... A single line hand stamped format on the right side center case (shown in pic) was used during the billet crank production run... when production of the casted crank was introduced, the serial number was machined stamped in a 2 line format on a raised square area on the right side center case...
A very fitting story is part of this bike's history... It had spent it's life in the Lake Elsinore area and the individual that I acquired it from had purchased it from the original owner who left it outside for several years next to a barn... It was brought back to life, ridden and raced, and then sat in a motorcycle shop in Lake Elsinore for several years as a shop queen... realizing the rarity and importance of this iconic machine, I made a firm commitment to take my time and spare no expense to bring this piece of history back to it's showroom glory

Just to clarify, I've had some questions regarding whether or not this bike was previously listed and or sold... I did list and sold a 74 CR250 last month... It was also a concours build and not the rare breed of this bike...
In addition, for those who may not know, although the 73 & 74 CR250's may look the same at a glance, Honda made several subtle changes to the 74 model and it is important to know these changes in order to correctly replicate either year model...
I've been to several bike shows and have viewed a handful of collections and the 73 CR250 is probably the most misrepresented bike I've seen and I have only seen one "early 73" and it was in a private collection... Even the CR250 at the NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM in Anamosa Iowa is not restored correctly and even has parts from other years...

To answer the exhaust questions - The pipe is NOS and is perfect ( paid $1,600.00)... The "pickle" silencer is OEM and is correct for the 73 bike only... The hanger tab on the silencer has a fix nut to fasten to the exhaust stay and in 74 Honda did away with the fixed nut and a bolt & nut are used to fasten to the exhaust stay... The 74 silencer is the same for the 74 CR250 & 74 CR125...A correct 73 silencer worthy of a restoration bike is a very hard part to come by as most are pretty beat up
