Horn And Hardart Co. Cup And Saucer, Mayer China, New York, Philadelphia :
You are looking at what I presume is amarried cup and saucer from the Horn and Hardart Co., cup from the New York location, saucer from Phila. PA! There is a small stretch fracture on the inside of the cup which looks to have been in the making, it has been stained from coffee use. There is normal wear on each piece. The Horn & Hardart Company had an interesting history beginning in Philadelphia in 1888, expanding to New Your in 1902. This is an unusual pair to find! Thanks for looking!
I have added 2 images of the flaw that is inside the cup, looks to be in the making or else someone really stirred their coffee hard, must have been robust coffee!
Manufacturer: Mayer ChinaUser:Horn & Hardart Co., Philadelphia, New York and New JerseyDate: pre-1928Notes: The first Horn and Hardart Automat opened June 12, 1902 at 818 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, PA. The first Automat in New York City opened ten years later at 1557 Broadway, Times Square, between 46th & 47th Streets. The distributor noted in the backstamps -- Wright, Tyndale and Van Roden -- was based in Philadelphia and went out of business circa 1928. Based on the backstamp information, it seems that the distributor provided china for Philadelphia and New York.
