Horse Racing Program: Round Table 1959 Santa Anita:
Interesting item from 2-23-59, Santa Anita. Washington's Birthday fell on a Sunday (the 22nd) so Monday was a legal holiday with no school. I attended the track that day with my folks and older brother. The feature race was the $50,000-added Washington's Birthday Handicap, a 12-furlong affair scheduled for the downhill turf course. It had rained heavily and the main track was "off" and it was undecided whether or not the main attraction would be moved to the main track or stay on a soggy (officially "soft") turf course. Round Table was slated to carry 134 lbs., and was really facing a non-descript, quite inferior bunch. However, 'Table hated any type of off track and had a preference for firm ground on grass as well. Track management finally decided to keep the race on the grass. Round Table, sent off at 1-2 odds, injured his ankle leaving the gate and Shoemaker never really asked 'Table for any run at all. He was sidelined for several months after this day, finishing last (16th). I believe it was only the 2nd time Round Table was beaten on grass, ever. Hakuchikara, under 110 lbs. and Ray York, scored at $91.40 with two parts of the "Field" (Anisado and Aorangi) finishing 2nd and 3rd. I have never seen this item on . RW
