HOSTER BREWING COLUMBUS OH PETERS AND REED MOSS AZTEC POTTERY MUG SIGNED FERRELL
HOSTER BREWING COLUMBUS OH PETERS AND REED MOSS AZTEC POTTERY MUG SIGNED FERRELL:
Hoster Brewing Company Columbus, Ohio pre prohibition art pottery presentation mug. Circa 1912. Manufactured by the Peters and Reed Pottery Company Zanesville, Ohio. Artist signed "Ferrell". The Hoster Brewery opened in Columbus in 1836 and operated until 1919. Dimensions are 14 1/4 inches tall, 5 1/4" diameter at the top and 6 3/4" in diameter at the base. The skill and detail that went into making the mug is off the charts. It's a unique piece of breweriana and makes a statement. Please take a careful look at the pictures The Peters and Reed Company was established in Zanesville, Ohio in 1898. They used red clay for their pottery which was abundant in South Zanesville. Frank Ferrell came to Peters and Reed around 1906. Ferrell was born in Zanesville and had previously worked for Weller and Owens potteries. In 1912 Ferrell designed the Moss Aztec line of pottery at Peters and Reed. Moss Aztec was deeply carved with a matte glaze and deep reddish-brown base with green deposits. The inside of the mug has a brown toned glaze. The literature suggests that artist signatures were uncommon in those days which adds to the importance of the piece. By 1918 Ferrell had moved on to Roseville Pottery which dates this mug in the 1912-1918 range. I believe the mug to be a presentation or commemoration piece probably given to executives of the Hoster Brewery. It was discovered by a picker in German Village over 40 years ago. To date this is the only example known. This mug has been in my personal collection for many years. It has a couple of minor flakes at the base (pictured) that can be easily repaired. It has the crossover appeal for both art pottery and breweriana collectors. It's also rich in Ohio's history. I guarantee it to be genuine. This mug can be the crown jewel of any breweriana collection!! It will be professionally packaged and shipped fully insured.
