HRH Princess of Wales WIMBLEDON 1888 NRA Maxim Cartridge Presentation Souvenir:
$325.00
Exceptional Souvenir of the WIMBLEDON 1888 National Rifle Association Meeting, being an inert .45 MAXIM Cartridge which functions as a pencil in it\'s fitted velvet case. Cartridge engraved as follows; \"THIS CARTRIDGE CASE WAS FIRED FROM A MAXIM GUN BY HRH THE PRINCESS OF WALES AT THE TERMINATION OF THE WIMBLEDON MEETING 1888\". Cartridge in excellent condition, appears to be thinly gilt, head turns to expose the writing lead. Fitted case interior is marked \"W. GREGORY OPTICIAN TO THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION 51 STRAND LONDON .......... WIMBLEDON\" (an indistinct word before WIMBLEDON). Exterior of case shows moderate wear over all, one hinge is partially detached. A very unusual item that crosses several collector categories. I found a photo online that shows Albert Prince of Wales firing the MAXIM Gun, apparently his wife, the Princess Alexandra also took a turn at it. 1888 was the last year that the NRA Championship was held at Wimbledon, concerns arose over the size of the crowds and the event was then moved to Bisley. Buyer adds $6.00 Priority Mail, overseas $20.00.
