Huge Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty Pottery Lokopala Guardian Figure - 900 A.d. For Sale
A spectacular, large and imposing, ancient Chinese Tang dynasty terracotta figure of a heavenly guardian (Lokapala), dating to around 900 AD.
The powerful warrior is depicted with great authority, shown standing proud and wearing dragon-ornamented breastplate, his eyes frowning and nostrils flared. He stands ready and defiant, with his right foot subduing a mythical deer-creature below. The left hand resting on hip and the right held out in front, likely holding a spear or other implement in antiquity, now long since perished.
Figures such as this were placed at the entrances of important tombs in antiquity. They are referred to as Lokapala and were believed to protect the owner against evil spirits. This fascinating figure reflects this other-worldly role.
Height of figure: 24 inches.
Condition: Good overall. Head reattached, possible further minor restorations. Areas of original pigment survive, some encrustations throughout.
