…… I’ve had my share of antique inkwells, even some with American Eagles, but the 19th century desktop inkwell we are listing tonight is by far one of the best, and definitely the largest. The green agate base measures 11 inches wide by 16 ½ inches long and is recessed in the front to hold pens. On either side is a 4 ¾ inch diameter bronze frame, which each hold a 3 ¾ inch diameter cut and polished heavy crystal inkwell. Both inkwells are crystal clear and they are in perfect, original condition with no restorations. At the back of this desk set is an architectural accent with five agate columns. These classical columns have Corinthian tops supporting a half circle bronze plinth. At the very top is a finely detailed American Eagle, which measures 9 inches tall by 9 inches from wings tip to wing tip. Overall, this circa 1880s Bronze and Marble Inkwell measures 20 inches tall. As you look at all our close-up photographs, you will see only two old restorations. The number two and number four columns have been reattached. These strong repairs are old and dirty and actually look like natural fissures in the agate. The eagle is attached; however, it is very slightly loose at the feet. You would have to remove the top to be able to tighten the nuts that are holding the eagle in place. I personally do not think this is necessary. There are no other problems or any restorations to this huge Victorian period bronze and agate eagle inkwell.
