These gorgeous bowls are formed by cutting the bottom from a dried hard shell gourd. I have a few that are a beaded coconut shell. The interior is then cleaned and a layer of beeswax applied. The bowl is then decorated using glass seed beads in native Huichol Indian designs. This art form is practiced in a very limited area of Mexico, by the Huichol Indians in Jalisco. To these natives, their art is considered sacred and their designs relate to their religious symbols that are nature based. The colors and designs are amazing, truly a treasure to enjoy for many years.

Most bowls are shallow, standing 1 1/8\" to 1 1/2\" tall. The underside of the bowl is left clean and natural, a rich medium brown color with the gourds and a dark brown if coconut. Because the beads are embedded in beeswax, a soft natural product, I would not recommend displaying them in a window where they would be exposed to the hot sun for long periods. I lived in a warm desert climate for many years and I never had a problem in my many years of collecting Huichol art but to me it seems only sensible that you would not want to do this.
