In the postwar period, as the world was returning to normal,
a resurgence in the fine arts was experienced throughout the world.
Culture was expressed and sought out by war-tired masses
and the furnishings and art world developed and cultivated
the greatest generation and their boomer descendants to
appreciate art history, visit museums and develop an artistic eye.This Ming dynasty inspired vase is one of the prodigal manifestations
of this new cultural immersion. Still done on a grand scale, that mass
production would make impossible in just a decade, this lamp displays
the hand painted glazes and meticulous craftsmanship of true artisans!These Chinese inspired lamps became almost religiously required
adornment in postwar Hollywood regency styled dwellings often
depicted lovingly in Architectural Digest magazine from 1945-1952.
The lamp is imposing - it takes up a large amount of space
and looks right in large interiors where lesser furnishings would be
swallowed up by the sheer scale of everythingThis larger than life dramatic style is no less impressive after sixty-five years!
This lamp with its intricate cut out designs and rich hues was designed
to bespeak of antiquity and now so few survive because of their fragility,
weight and size. This lamp now represents both the 18th century Chinese
artistic scene it was designed to evoke, and the mid century postwar
period with its exuberance and new found love for art & culture.A wonderful treasure that will be the illumination centerpiece of any room!
Light plays through the cut outs from all sides and the glazes are
absolutely resplendent when hit by the sun!In excellent condition. Very lustrous enamel.
Slight age wear and chipping to the porcelain and to the 20\" fabric shade.
