IMPORTANT GEORGIAN Solid Silver LARGE MUG TANKARD 1793 Hallmarked Sterling NR
HALF PINT - Joseph Dodds - 7+ troy oz - STUNNING DESIGN
This is a superb GEORGE III solid sterling silver LARGE TANKARD or MUG that was made in London, England in 1793 by the famous Georgian silversmith, Joseph Dodds at his Aldersgate Street workshops. It has a superb and traditional tapering shape, is raised on a low skirt base and has a solid scroll handle. The sides have engraved bands. It measures over2 3/4" in diameter across the base, 2 1/2" across the rimand stands almost 3 3/8" high. It is very substantial - its capacity is a full HALF PINT - it weighs223.9 grams -almost 7 1/4troy oz. It is NOT engraved with initials or a crest.
It is hallmarked I.D,lion passant (sterling silver assay mark),crowned leopard head,s, George III duty markshowing that it was hallmarked in London in 1793. It is in very good condition with just the usual surface scratching,very few minor dings and dents and little distortion but NO repairs - it is a remarkable piece of quality silver work - SUPERB. I've shown the hallmark so you can make up your own mind. A really superb rare GEORGIAN TANKARD in very good condition after220 years and at a very low start!!!
