Twelve Aspects of the Great Goddess
Pahari, late 19th century
Natural colors and gold on Indian hand made paper
33 x 26 cm
In this private devotional picture we see twelve forms of Devi or Shakti. Though there are no identifying inscriptions we can identify that the first square is inhabited by Parvati and Shiva and the second by Sri Ram, Sita, Laximana, and Hanuman. The remaining squares are inhabited by tantric forms of Devi and each appears to be being worshiped by one of Vishnu's avatars. To the upper left we can see a small deity with a bow; Sri Ram. In the first square in the middle we see Kurma or the turtle avatar at worship. Second in the Middle we can see Vamana, or the dwarf avatar. On the far right of the middle we find Narasimha standing in obeisance. Below we see Varaha, Matsya, and Kalki. The other avatars are surely present, however I am not able to identify them with certainty.
