After a serious deliberation (and after a conversation with a buyer-member in person), we decided to cancel this sale an relist this drawing. We came to the conclusion that we were too enthousiastic on the level of the attribution, which made us decide to start the listing all over again.
Important aspect of the general conclusion : the quality of the drawing not in discussion. Therefore, it will be a passionating effort to do the extra research on this fine drawing. From a find in the Sarthe region, is this refined 18th century Italian masterdrawing. The drawing, executed in pen, ink and grey wash on laid paper, depicts an animated landscape in the surroundings of Venice. Two men (one clearly equiped to go fishing) are depicted near the ruins of an entrancegate. Left we can notice a town at the banks of a lake or river.Authorship : the drawing is from the Italian-Venetian school, attributed to the circle of Bernado Belotto (Venice 1720 - Warsaw 1780). Looking at all the aspects of the drawing, we can only conclude that the artist worked close to Canaletto and Belotto.
