He became an officer while in the Pennsylvania 104th Cavalry.
At some point soon after he joined the paratroops and the 101st Airborne Division.
He jumped into Normandy June 6th in command of a pathfinder security unit.
Here is the story told by Mrs W. just a few years ago.
Mr. W. was the first to jump while the plane was taking evasive maneuvers.
When he hit the ground and clicked his click clack cricket there was no response.
A sinking feeling came over him as he realized he was all alone.
He managed to escape and evade the Germans for a good time until they finally
cornered and wounded him.
After his capture the Germans sent him to a French hospital to tend to his wounds.
During this time one of the French nurses helped Mr W. out by bringing him extra food.
(A picture of this nurse on her wedding day is in another sale. They remained friends after the war)
When the BREAKOUT occurred in August 1944 the Germans started to evacuate the hospital.
