Igbo Maiden Spirit Mask, Monkey-Man on Top, African
Additional Information: The mask illustrated here is an Igbo maiden spirit mask with remnants of kaolin pigment. The figure perched atop is part monkey, part man. Known throughout Igbo land, these masks are most prominent among the Northern Igbo. They represent a delicate beauty and feminine essence. In general, the face mask is carved with fine, delicate features with light coloring and dark scarification. Usually, cosmetic markings are found in areas by the ears, foreheads, eyes and cheeks. Our mask is simple and does have scarification only on the forehead The surface is covered with white pigment and lost parts of its encrustation.
Maiden spirit masks known as as Agbogho Mmuo were worn by men of middle rank in the secret society. These masks, repainted before each use, are used in Okkperegede dances to honor the Queen the female ancestor or the "Queen of Women". Today such masks can also be seen in other ceremonies of secret societies or in social gathering events. They dance at the beginning of the dry season, and at funerals with their elaborate burial ceremonies. The beautiful maiden masks will appear singly or as pairs in dances emulating women doing their everyday activities; farming, going to market, etc. The costumes worn with the masks are colorful, made up of different colored cloth appliqués and detailed design patterns. Fake breasts are added to emphasize the maternal aspect on the character it represents.
I have examined this piece and agree with the description.
