Igbo Mmo Fertility Figure, African Tribal Creations, Nigeria Art Ibo Spirit Mask For Sale
AnAfrican Tribal Creations sale!!!
This sale is for an Igbo Fertility figure. The Igbo ethnic group inhabit a heavily forested region of south-western Nigeria, and subsist via farming, merchant trading, hunting, and fishing. As a society, the Igbo have a long established cultural hierarchy and are divided into some thirty three diverse subgroups, which at least in part explains the diversity of art found among them. Secret societies abound within the Igbo communities, and are responsible for change as well as tradition in the social and political life among the people. As a collective people, they display a remarkable artistic diversity, shared among dozens and dozens of mask varieties, as well as an innumerable variation in figures. Instruments, doors, frames, and an abundance of other functional objects are also produced out of wood.
The northern Igbo are well known for their mmoor maiden spirit masks. With less frequency, they also produce figures of the ancestral spirits as well, marked primarily with white (kaolin) pigment. Typical to that style, this piece features a tall and elegant, detailed coiffure, in this case darkly pigmented. Much of the rest of the body is covered with pigment. The figures hands are depicted framing the swollen belly, a notable motif of fertility. The breast of the figure is firm and taught, a sign also associated with fecundity. Identifying scarification marks can be noted in several places on the figure. The piece is carved with a base, and stands on its own without support, though it does lean and support would be advisable. It is a moderately large figure, in good condition, with no major cracking, breaks, or repairs. The pigment does not display extensive wear, and we presume that this is more recently created piece. This beautiful piece will finely grace any collection, and is now available for sale!
Dimensions of this piece are 20.5" x 3.5" x 6.5",
and it weighs in at four and a half pounds.
Medium: Wood, Pigment
