Provenance: Savu Island, Indonesia; collected in the late 1970sand early 1980s.

Method:Hand spun cotton, hand woven, vegetable dyes, warp ikat. The dyes are the indigo plant rau dao blue-black; Morinda citrifolia for red, and tumeric Curcuma domestica for yellow. Savu is known for its woven textiles that can take months to produce. Weaving is a social affair and few women, especially those living in villages, can still be found weaving on the back veranda of their houses. The process involves tightening the yarn into bundles with young smoked coconut leaves. Then they are repeatedly dipped into the dye and dried until the colors are as saturated as desired. The parts to be left uncolored are tied-up again. (Ina Tali/F.Von Reinhaart, 2006).

Description: Mixed dark blue and morinda red background with dominating blue black in the floral bands. The rich black that is a combination of indigo and mengkudu red is a trademark of Savu weavers. The main pattern is floral motifs. This is a tubular garment for a woman constructed from two long identical panels hand-stitched together along the warp to form a double width cloth which is again stitched at the warp ends to form a tube. The two long identical panels need to be joined due to the limited width of a backstrap loom on which they are woven.

History and Use: Warp ikat sarong or tube skirts are worn by the women of Savu as part of their traditional costume. This design belongs to the Greater Blossom group, indicating a Savu clan affiliation. The designs are passed down from mother to daughter, and the textiles with these motifs are for ceremonial wear only. Traditional Savu ikats follow strict design rules governing the format, colors, and use of motifs by the two main matrilineal groups, Greater Blossom and Lesser Blossom, that are further sub-divided into groups of “Seeds”. However, the floral motif of European origin introduced by Dutch missionaries is not restricted to any group, as it is used for textiles in the neutral category (called worapi) that developed during colonial and Christian rule. Worapi textiles allow more design freedom and how and when they are worn, as the cloth doesn\'t have ritual meaning and has no particular proscriptions. Ikat tube sarongs of hand spun cotton had all but disappeared by the early 1990s.
