Important GEORGIAN Solid Silver LARGE JUG 1795 Hallmarked Sterling NEWCASTLE NR
Provincial - NEWCASTLE - Superb Condition - 5 troy oz
This is a really outstanding GEORGIAN PROVINCIAL solid sterling silver milk or cream jug which was made in Newcastle, England, probably in about 1795 by the illustrious silversmith Thomas Watson at his The Side workshops. This wonderfully stylish and fine quality jug is in superb condition. This wonderful jug is in a stunning Georgian baluster reeded design - oval in shape with a reeded handle and engraved bands to the side. It is NOT engraved to either cartouche. The jug measures 4 3/4" tall by 2 1/2" deep andis 4 7/8" long from handle to lip.It is very substantial - it weighs138.9 grams -almost 4 1/2troy oz.
The jug is in lovely condition with a little less than the usual light surface scratching and NO splits, a small collection of dings with NO dents and NO distortion with NO repairs - SUPERB. It is hallmarked to the side with TW, lion passant (sterling silver assay mark),3 keeps, crowned leopard head andGeorge III duty mark showing that it was hallmarked in Newcastle in about 1795. I have shown the hallmark so that you can make up your own mind. A really lovely and very rare GEORGIAN PROVINCIAL jug in SUPER condition afteralmost 220 years as you can see from the photographs - at a VERY low start and -VERY RARE.
