Je Tsongkapa, Amitabha Buddha
In this sale:
Important and exquisitely made ornate Tibetan repoussé ( chased, embossed ) and parcel gilt copper Buddhist Manuscript Cover.
The cover depicts Lama TSONGKHAPA / Je Tsong Khapa / Je Rinpoche (1357-1419) in the centre.
To his right and left, sitthe two close disciples ofTsongkhapa (probably):
Gyaltsap Dharma Rinchen (1364-1432) and Kedrup Geleg Pal Zangpo (1385-1438).
The group is flanked by two bodhisattvas: four-armeded AVALOKITESVARA (Guanyin) and wrathful VAJRAPANI.
Tsongkhapa is seated on a lotus throne with two lotus flowers on his two sides, against an aureole, in mountainous Tushita landscape, surrounded with waving grass. Further on two sides are two kneeling figures with gifts.
In the clouds in the upper part are two Kirtimukhas and two flying female attendants.
Lama Tsongkapa was the founder of the Gelugpa School of or Yellow Hat school of Tibetan Buddhism.
Under Tsongkhapa leadership, Gelug Order spread across Tibet and became the largest school of Tibetan Buddhism.
The Dalai Lamas are the heads of this school.
The border has repeating conch shell motif and inscriptions.
The conch shell that the Shakyamuni Buddha had given Tsong Khapa,
when he was a boy was unearthed during the building of Ganden monastery in Lhasa;
it could still be seen in Drepung monastery.
The back side of the cover is painted with the three seated figures.
In the center Amitabha of Amida Buddha (de buddha van het oneindige licht) the principal buddha of thePure Land sect.
Here Amitabha is portrayed with two assistants: Avalokitesvara holding lotus flower on the right and Mahasthamaprapta on the left.
Amitabha Buddha is associated with: longevity, ability of distinguishing (recognition) and awareness of individualities.
Avalokitesvara ( Guanyin ) bodhisattva embodies the compassion of all Buddhas.
Mahasthamaprapta is a bodhisattva represents the power of wisdom.
The gilt copper repousse panel has a good patina.
Manuscript covers, of this quality, done in gilt repousse copper are rare.
