I discovered this item recently somewhere in the Holyland. I thought it was perhaps a regular Shivisi put up in a home or Synagogue, but upon closer inspection, to the right hand corner of this splendid work of Jewish folk art, I discovered that it was made of all places in BOMBAY INDIA!!
As far as I can tell the following words are etched on the silver glass: "G.K. DENGLE 5TH ...? BOMBAY,4 ".
A SHIVITI is a short hand version in Hebrew meaning: "I have set G-d before me, always", and is put on the Eastern wall of a home or Synagogue, which is used to notify the congregants that towards this direction one should pray which is Jerusalem. My guess it was made some time in the 20th century.
Condition: Shows signs of usage. I can't open the back as it is nailed with a wooden board, but I can see that some of the silver paint used has rubbed out mainly along the perimeter of the painting.
Measurements: The Shiviti measures 13.5 x 19.5 INCHES (including the frame).
