RARE c1890 INDIAN COIN SILVER DANCING DIVINITIES ON SATIN SURFACE CENTRE BOWL; MADRAS; EXCELLENT CONDITION
This is an exceptional late 19th century Indian coin silver dancing divinities centre bowl. A superb example of silver from the Madras region. Renowned for their "swami" designs, in which various Hindu dieties and mythical creatures are featured. Often in scenes taken from centuries old literature. When the Prince of Wales visited India in 1875-1876, he received numerous examples of Madras, swami design silver from P. Orr and Sons. Much like the elephant head bowl offered today. As you know, there has been an explosive interest in Chinese silver the last year. Prices have appreciated 3-400% or more this year. Indian colonial silver prices have only now begun to rise. We believe that very shortly Indian silver will experience this same torrential price appreciation. Classic raised circular form. Elegant fan medallion and scallp rim. Adorned with a series of beautifully carved swami style dieties in prayer, meditation and dance. Set in leaf and swirling vine. Several of the figures holding one or more cobra. One rising fom the ocean out of the mouth of a large fish. A second with leg above the fish. The figures deep cut, in exceptional relief from the surface. Characteristic of Madras silver. Thick heavy guage solid silver construction it weighs 20 (standard) ounces. Unmarked. Not unusual for Madras work. we guaratee solid silver, not silver plate. And of the appox. age and region stated.
