As you know, there has been an explosive interest in Chinese silver the last year. Prices have appreciated 3-400% or more this year.
Indian colonial silver prices have only now begun to rise. We believe that very shortly Indian silver will experience this same torrential price appreciation. Signed examples from the important Calcutta firms are poised to make the greatest advances.
Vase in classic pear shape. Elegant gently scalloped ruffled rim.
Adorned with beautifully hand decorated Bengal village scenes. Displayed in two separate friezes.
Calcutta silver is known for this design.
Farmer carrying twin satchels balanced atop pope across shoulder. Woman in long rope with goods atop her head. Thatch roof cottages, tall shade trees and exotic foliage all about.
Below, a farmer working his crops, while another women carries bushel balanced atop head.
Wilkinson notes that the firm imported sterling sheets from England, rather than use unpredictable (assayed) domestic silver.
