Indian Sterling Silver Swirling Vine Surai Bottle Kashmir C1880 For SaleFINE & RARE c1890 INDIAN STERLING SILVER SURAI OR DRINING VESSEL; KASHMIR REGION
This is a c1890 Indian sterling silver bottle form drinking vessel called a surai.
From the Kashmir region of India. Second only to Cutch in design and workmanship.
Much, much less silver was crafted in Kashmir. Hence, it is more rarely seen.
As you know, there has been an explosive interest in Chinese silver the last year. Prices have appreciated 3-400% or more this year.
Indian colonial silver prices have only now begun to rise. We believe that very shortly Indian silver will experience this same torrential price appreciation.
In classic long neck bottle form.
Adorned with series of swirling, stylized leaf and flower filled medallions. Set amidst streaming vine and individually carved flower heads. This is the shawl pattern from Kashmir. Wilkinson illustrates several identical examples page 104-106. The design is taken from designs on the world renowned shawls of Kashmir.
Wilkinson also notes that Kashmir silver ranges 90-98% pure (page 106).
This Kashmiri surai is 6 1/4 inches tall and 4 1/2 (standard) ounces.
Unsigned. As is the case with most all Kashmiri silver.
Fine condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. Stands firm on table or display shelf. The brilliantly carved streaming leaf, vine and floral decoration retains its original crisp detail. Two small bumps lower body and couple tiny nicks to upper rim, likely had chained cover, now gone.
For the discerning collector of the finest 19th century Indian silver. Focused upon the most rare of forms. An exceptional c1880 Indian sterling silver Kashmiri surai or drinking vessel.

Remember, the items you see are antiques. Hence, have an expected amount of wear from normal use. As such, returning an item because we failed to mention the tiniest bit of wear, or barely discernible flaw is not acceptable. Nor do we accept returns based on buyer's remorse. Nor change of taste, or because a buyer did not realize how "small" four inches might be once in hand.
