Morgan Thermal Ceramics Brand
Typical Applications of Insulating Firebrick by Industries
Following Information Provided by
Thermal Ceramics was first to introduce insulating firebrick (IFB) to the industry in the 1930’s. The IFB are manufactured with a unique slurry casting process which creates a network of microporosity which produces low thermal conductivity and good thermal shock characteristics. This process produces brick that are some of the most efficient insulators available in the market. The anorthite mineralogy (CaO, Al2O3, 2 SiO2) of these low temperature IFB gives excellent strength at operating temperatures and resistance to corrosive alkali environments.
Extremely low “K” factors
Low heat storage
Excellent strength at room and high temperatures
Excellent resistance to alkali attack
Excellent service in applications involving special atmospheres

Insulation Fire Brick imperfections:
Setting Expectations of Buyers
Unfamiliar with Heavy yet Fragile Firebrick
If you are new to working with Insulating Fire Brick (IFB),
You may perceive some imperfection issues of the product upon delivery.
These may include:
1. Air pockets or holes.
The manufacturing process may result in air pockets or holes like Swiss cheese on the interior of the IFB that are as large as 3/8" in diameter. Some of these air pocket holes, like the chips, may also be located near the exterior edges or sides of the brick and are an industry standard feature of the product manufacturing process.Such imperfections are expected and should be accounted for in your application design. If you encounter visible air pockets or holes, keep in mind that a few small holes should not affect the performance characteristics of the material significantly.
2. Chips, flakes or crumbles.
During shipping, handling & transportation, related issues occur where small chips may fall off of the corners or edges of the IFB. IFB is fragile, making it common for small chips to break off commonly on the corners & edges of the IFB. Such imperfections are expected & should be accounted for in your application design. If you encounter a chipped edge or corner, keep in mind that a few small chips should not affect the performance characteristics of the material significantly.
3. Clean cracks.
Cracks do not affect the performance characteristics of the IFB material. IFB is similar to a brittle sponge with many small air pockets made of a material that does not conduct heat or electricity.
A clean crack does not yield lower insulation values. To mitigate separation of the cracked material, the IFB should be kept together with slight pressure on either side of the crack. If you have the design ability to place the crack between the bricks, such that the crack is held together by another IFB against it, full insulative performance could be expected.
If you are concerned with the performance of the IFB due to air pocket holes or chipped corners, clean cracks etc.,place the best face of the brick toward the heat you wish to insulate, leaving the air hole, chipped edge, etc., on the outside of your design. You may also choose to cut out a section and replace with another section, as the material is easily cut and shaped with a serrated edge or file rasp.
