Inuit Print By Lucy Qinnuayuak, early Original 1967 Cape Dorset Print, #23 Of 50 For Sale
This a beautiful, early, 1967Cape Dorset print by Inuit artist Lucy Qinnuayuak (1915 - 1982), entitled "Bear, Birds, and Fish." It is an authentic original co-op print with the igloo stamp and embossed paper seal, and is signed, titled, and dated in pencil.
It is in great vintage condition; the paperretains itsoriginal color, with no staining, discoloration, or foxing. There are some very small brown speckles scattered across the paper, similar to thoseI have seen on most of the early Cape Dorset prints; these aretiny and only visible on close inspection. There is a very gentle, faint fold in the top-half/center of the paper, about 8"to 9" long (running vertically), that has not permanently creased or damaged the paper structure. I believe this would flatten out pretty easily, either by matting/framing the print, or by conservator humidifying, as the paper fiber itself has not beencreased or visibly altered at all. There are also some small, light folds/creases that fall outside the image area, on the left and right sides of the paper; these aremost concentrated near the two smallpieces of hangingtape adhered to the back of the print, on the left and right top edges (see photos #5, 6, 7, 8 -- note: photo #7 showsback side of print w/tape). These two small pieces of tape are also well outside the image area, attached at the top corners within 2 inches of the edges, and would not be visible once the print is matted and framed. Please view all the photos, as they show details of the overall conditions described above.
The colors of the print are a variegated rainbow-roll of dark green, black, and yellow-ocher, and the print process was a "stonecut." It is print number 23, of the original edition of 50 prints. The imagery, reflecting Qinnuayuak's colorfulimagination, is adelightful and fanciful rendition of owl, bird, fish, and polar bear forms, and seems to pose the question, "Just who is eating whom?" There is a bird form inside the bear (notably looking quite alive and healthy, nevertheless), and both the bear and the owl are staking a claim on the fish, either by tooth or talon. Each of the five creaturesdisplays a wide-eyed expression of surprise or perhaps puzzlement, and the overall composition of the print is a fascinating combination of both naivete and sophistication -- a story of life and death told in one strong, clean, bold image.
