INUIT (CANADA) HAND CARVED DARK GREEN SOAPSTONE SCULPTURE OF POLAR BEARWITH PAIR OF CUBS(Circa 1955-1965)
DESCRIPTION:The tips of all the ears, as well as all corners of this fine hand carved Inuit (Canada) dark green soap stone sculpture of a mother polar bear with two cubs, is in outstanding overall vintage condition. There are no \'knocks\' to its smooth, polished surface and the exterior is free from abrasions, scuffs, hairlines, breaks, repairs or other anomalies or imperfections. The figuration is fresh and inventive, demonstrating reverence toward this natural fauna and displaying tenderness and awe at this both feared and respected creature of the far north, who the Inuit people would have almost daily contact with. The detailing is superb, albeit slightly stylized. This natural depiction of the trio of bears, shows spiritual affinity and understanding that this feared predator is also fighting for its own survival in an inhospitable Arctic Environment, much as the Inuit themselves struggle everyday to survive on a white, barren frozen landscape. Outstanding figuration and handling.
