In 1968 the last of the big Irish pennies were minted. First launched in 1928 these pennies featured a harp, éire, and date on the obverse, and a hen and chickens and 1d on the reverse. They are substantial coins from a bygone era, made from solid bronze they are 30mm or nearly 1.25 inches in diameter (same as an American half dollar). They were withdrawn by the Central Bank of Ireland in 1971 when the currency was decimalised. With 240 to £1 they were not going to fit into a decimal system!

A "Penny for Luck" was a tradition in Ireland especially in rural areas. When a deal was struck and a price agreed, the custom was for the seller to give a "Penny for Luck" back to the buyer! Talk to any child of the 60s in Ireland and pennies featured large in everyday life.
