Irish Civil War Broadside From Eamon De Valera's Ira For Sale
Irish Civil War broadside printed by the IRA on the third day of the war during the Battle of Dublin. After the War for Independence from England, Ireland was divided over the Anglo-Irish Treaty resolution. The Free State forces led by Michael Collins were amenable to the terms, but Republican militants under Eamon de Valera insisted the treaty kept Ireland under English rule and demanded a renegotiation. For effect, the IRA occupied the Four Courts building in Dublin until the Free State forces opened fire on them on 28 June 1922. Two days later, this broadside, dated 30 June 1922, breaks the latest news in the conflict: ''...The Free Staters are using the Tower of St. Michigan's Protestant Church, and the Protestant Medical Mission as sniping posts against the soldiers of the Irish Republic...'' After a destructive weeklong engagement, the Free State forces won Dublin, and the Civil War descended into guerrilla warfare until the IRA's ultimate defeat a year later. Measures 15'' x 20''. Toning and creasing, with a pinhole to a fold intersection at upper right, else near fine.
