Broadside printed by the IRA while the Battle of Dublin was in full swing as the first battle of the Irish Civil War. Dated 1 July 1922, the anti-treaty propaganda reads in part: ''...The Anglo-Irish war is not over: the latest of the battles of seven centuries is being fought in the streets of Dublin today...'' Immediately after the Irish War for Independence from England, civil war broke out in Ireland. The Free State forces, led by Michael Collins, were amenable to the terms of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and sought to bring fighting to an end, but they were opposed by the Republicans led by Eamon de Valera. Convinced the Anglo-Irish Treaty in fact kept Ireland under English rule, the IRA demanded a renegotiation of the Treaty. For effect, they occupied the Four Courts building in Dublin. On 28 June 1922, pro-Treaty Free State forces attempted to quash the rebellion with an attack on the IRA at the Four Courts. The highly destructive, weeklong Battle of Dublin was won by the Free State (with help from Great Britain). The fighting descended into guerrilla warfare throughout the country, and the war raged on for a year before the Free State's ultimate victory over the ill-equipped IRA one year later.
