Irish Civil War Broadside Printed By Eamon Devalera Ira For Sale
Broadside from the Irish Civil War issued by the IRA. Dated 2 July 1922, the propaganda reports, in part: ''...At 9 p.m. tonight 50 prisoners of the Irish Republican Army were brought under heavy escort to Mountjoy Criminal Prison / On arrival there they demanded...they be treated as prisoners of war. To this demand the officer in charge...replied...that no concessions were to be granted...they would be treated as criminals...Comdt.-Gen McKelvey, speaking on behalf of the Republican prisoners, then stated that they would refuse to enter the cells, and that they would have to be carried there by force...the Republican prisoners are to enter the cells with no terms agreed to beforehand...'' After the Irish War for Independence from England, Ireland's populace was divided over the Anglo-Irish Treaty resolution. The Free State forces led by Michael Collins were amenable to the terms, but the anti-Treaty Republican opposition led by Eamon de Valera insisted on a renegotiation of the Treaty. On 28 June 1922, Civil War broke out when Free State forces attempted to quash the rebellion by attacking the IRA-occupied Four Courts building in Dublin. The war raged on for a year before the Free State's ultimate victory. Measures 15'' x 20''. Toning and creasing, especially along left edge, else near fine.
