Italian Pottery Bitossi Hedgehog, Raymor Italy Echidna, Aldo Londi Animal:

This rare example of Italian pottery was designed by Aldo Londi for Bitossi in the early 1960\'s. It is round and plump with a handcrafted nose and cast eyes. It was hand-painted and incised with a special tool that adds a dimension to its back. Commonly called a hedgehog, this furry friend mostly resembles an echidna. It is signed \'4804 ITALY\' by its maker and is adorned with a Raymor Imports sticker and the three-digit code for Bitossi, \'BIT\'. What\'s more, its maker\'s fingerprints (dare I say Aldo Londi himself) appear in clay marking on the bottom, most likely occurring during the glazing process.

Condition: This piece is in nice vintage condition. I have been lucky enough to see two others in person in a private collection and both have clay marking around the beak and eyes. It is not a defect as far as I can tell. In addition, there is a marking on its back (best seen in photo 2) To me it looks like it was done at the factory. In any event, it\'s hardly noticeable and certainly adds to the quirkiness of this interesting piece.
