Eastern modalism and intervallic inventionin Coltrane\'s sound at this point, but still moves in his own direction,sticking very close to the blues and the hard, even relentless, swing providedby Williams on the kit. The CD version of the album contains two takes ofMcLean\'s "Saturday and Sunday," which make use of the insistent bluesline and Williams\' driving and dancing drumming style. But the true visionarycompositions here are Moncur\'s "Frankenstein" and "GhostTown." Their unconventional solo horn melodic statements followed by twohorn choruses and their irrepressible urge to use Hutcherson\'s vibes as acontrapuntal element, while spreading out his chords so wide that he comes offas a pair of pianos playing complementary harmonic strategies, arerevolutionary. Add to this Moncur\'s insistence on soloing inside the changes asMcLean moves through the register and becomes increasingly dissonant, and youhave a true doppelgänger effect -- but one that swings like mad. One StepBeyond may have been the first volley McLean fired in the direction of the newjazz, and played it safe enough to ride out the hard bop he helped to create,but he cannot be faulted as a bandleader, as this music still sounds fresh,vital, and full of grainy mystery.

(a)WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ .CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in avery nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions,mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1inch = 2.5 centimeters)
(b)The record has a ►RudyVan Gelder name, or his initials(RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent,Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masteringseither done by - or personallyauthorized by - the legendary engineer himself.
(c)The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(d)Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. Wethink that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that themixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate thatstereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least10:1.
(e)Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and notan inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws orimperfections are noted on the cover:
-Cover has some fraying/wear along the top and bottom seams
-Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On thescale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3
-Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-coveredsections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbingagainst other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearanceto a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may bepossible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
-Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparentlyfrom aging (nothing significant).
-Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine and theopening side
-Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard baseon the front panel
-Minor shelf wear noted on the spine (nothing significant)and the opening side.
-Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just abeginning of the split seam)
