Japanese Antique 120 Year Old 3 Section Lidded Suzuribako Calligraphy Tansu For Sale
Thisisa very special Japanesethree section suzuribako - inbako (portable calligraphy tansu - stamp box)made entirely of Japanesehinoki (cypress) wood. This chest shows a highdegree of Japanese craftsmanship in the construction, joined throughout with multiple hardened hinoki wood pegs(see picture 10). This chest was rescued from a 500 year old family warehouse just outside Kyoto and dates to the late 1800's (mid to lateMeiji Era).
Thehand forged iron metal on this chest also date itto theMeijiera as and latches are allmade of forged ironwith a protective coat of burnt lacquer. The top handle is made in a warabite (fern hand) style and the double action lock is still fully functional withkey (see pictures 8 & 9). This chest was used to hold calligraphy and writing materials as well as money. valuables, and personal namechops. The lidded top area has a removeable two section box with a deep recessed area beneath for additional storage (see picture 7).
While there are two key inserts in this unusual lock (see picture 8)the top key hole seems to function just fine, while the bottom is an inigma to me. It probably once required more than one key as a security measure.

The top carrying handle is still secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest. The lided top opens with the turn of the key (see picture 7) andholds the top securly in place when the lid is locked.
