Japanese Antique 100+ Year Old Hand Pounded Bronze Hibachi Ikebana Vase For Sale
Aunique Japanese bronze vase (hibachi) from thelate Meiji Era (c.1900). It is a heavy bronze with fu-dog head shaped handles (see pictures 4 & 5). The design on the sides is done in hand pounded work throughout. The fu-dog have outstreached tongues and allowed one to carry the hibachi while it was hot.
The fu-dog was said to be half lion and half dog with the spunk of both. It was a benevolent creature to mankind and protector of the spirit world.
This was hibachi vase originally used as a space heater and had a bed of ash on which charcoal would sit. You can see the line on the interior where the ashlevel once came (see picture 6).The lower section slopes gracefully in and then flares out to a form a solid base (see pictures 3 & 8). This was the type of hibachi wascommonly used in Japanese inns toprovideheat for tea andto warmindividual rooms. The stylized fu-dog head handles with their oustreached tongues formed side handleswhich allowed it to be carried while hot.
This hibachi has been well used yet well loved, and with its deep bronzepatinait remains in very fine condition. It measures10" high by 10 1/2" wide (25 x25.5 cm) and is a niceheavy bronze weighing in atabout 6 pounds.
It is water tight and would make a faboulous center piece for a flower arrangement.
