Japanese Antique 120 Year Old Meiji Era Wooden Suzuribako Calligraphy Tansu For Sale
Thisisa very special Japanesethree drawer (with liddedtop section),portable calligraphy tansumade entirely ofkiri chest shows a highdegree of Japanese craftsmanship in the joinery, being made with hardened hinoki pegged wood (see picture 10). Theprotective iron metal on this chest as well as the single action lock with key (see pictures 8 & 9)date itto themid Meiji era (c.1890). All drawer pulls,hinges, locksand latches are allmade of ironwith a protective coat of burnt lacquer. This small chest was used to hold calligraphy and writing materials as well as money and valuables.The lidded top sectionheld brushes and an ink stone (suzuri) (not included).
There is a name of of the original owner,Kato Seihatchi, as well as his purchase date: the24th year of Meiji(1891) written in Japanese on the bottom of one of the drawers. Also written in Japanese is the prefecture, Saitama ken, in which it was purchased. The date this suzuribako was actually made surely predates the purchase date. Even so it dates it over 122 years old.
This chest has been well loved yet well used and still has its original deep warm patina that only a century of loving use could provide. There are a few areas of minor restoration on the top as seen in the enlarged picturesThe top carrying handle is still secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest (see last picture 2). The lided top opens with the push of the side bottom (see picture 7) andsnapswith the same push of a button. The lock mechanism seen in pictures 8 & 9) is still operable and locks with the provided key. Overall this chest remains in very fine original condition.
