Japanese Antique 130 Year Old Meiji Era Wooden Suzuribako Calligraphy Tansu

Thisisa very special Japanesethree drawer (with liddedtop section),portable calligraphy tansumade entirely ofkiri chest shows a highdegree of Japanese craftsmanship in the joinery, being made with hardened hinoki pegged wood (see pictures 10 & 11).
Theprotective forged iron on this chest dates itto themid Meiji era (c. 1880). All drawer pulls,hinges, locksand latches are allmade of ironwith a protective coat of burnt lacquer. This box was used to hold calligraphy and writing materials as well as money and valuables.The lidded top sectionheld brushes and an ink stone (suzuri) (not included).

This chest has been well loved yet well used and still has its original deep warm patina that only a century plus of loving use could provide. The top carrying handle is still secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest (see picture 9).The lidded top opens with the push of the side button (see picture 8) andsnapsshut when the lid is lowered.

3/4" high by 9 3/4"deep(18 x19.5 x25 cm). A very warm accentfor your home or office. Great to hold pens as well as remote controls for the tv and stereo. Please enjoy the enlarged pictures to get a full appreciation of the finekiri wood and its 130+ year old patina.
