Japanese Antique 180 Year Old Bronze Hibachi Ikabana Vase Chrysanthemum Dragon For Sale
Aunique Japanese bronze vase (hibachi) from themid Edo Era (c.1820). It is a heavy bronze with thick relief images of a stream flowing between chrysanthemum flowers. Asian mythology has it that drinking from a stream that flowed between Chrysanthemums would help a person live to be 100.This 180 year old bronze has certainly made it beyond that mark. The side handles are in the form of young dragons (another benevolent auspicious asian symbol).
This was originally used as a space heater and had a bed of ash on which charcoal would sit. You can see the line on the interior where the ashlevel once came (see picture 9).The lower section slopes gracefully in and then flares out to a form a solid base (see picture 4). This was the type of hibachi was commonly used in Japanese inns toprovideheat for tea andto warmindividual rooms. The stylizeddragon side handlesseen in picture 10allowed it to be carried while hot. It has a very attractive shape with a fluted top anda waisted bottom.
This hibachi has been well used yet well loved, and with the exception tominor stains from age as well as a deep bronzepatinait remains in very fine condition. It is water tight and would make a magnificent center piece with or without flowers. It measures8 1/2" high by 11 " wide (21 x28 cm) and is a niceheavy bronze weighing in atjust abouteight pounds.
This impressive bronze from Japan's Edo Era is being listed today with and free stateside shipping. Good Luck!
