Japanese Antique 5 Drawer Lidded Tansu Haribako Sewing Box Burl Mulberry :
This is an early Showa Era (c. 1930's) haribako (sewing box) with a unique arrangement of four drawersand an additional (fifth drawer) area in a flip top lidded section. Thetop lided area is divided into three sections with a removeable pin cushion box on the left as well as a coveredcenter area and flip up "third hand" on the right (see picture 7).This tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding.
The entire box is made with a traditional hinoki wood peg construction as well as overlap corner work (see picture 8). The face is made of burled Japanese mulberry wood with kiri (paulownia) wood interiors and zelkova (keyaki) case work. The hardware is all hand forged copper. With the exception of some very minor restoration (some added nails for additional stregth) and area of minor corner loss (see last picture), this chest is all original and overall in very fine condition with a very warm patina that only nearly a century of loving use could give.
All drawers run smoothly and the lidded top opens and closes with ease. Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest before offerding. This chest measures 11 1/2" wide by 9 1/4" high by 7" deep (29 x 23 x 18 cm). Very solidly built, a great piece of Japanese history; and makes a classic desk top organizer today.
